Article: Life-Changing Support for a Kungka Rebuilding Her Future

Life-Changing Support for a Kungka Rebuilding Her Future

Life-Changing Support for a Kungka Rebuilding Her Future

When a community member raised concerns about Georgie*, kungka (young woman), experiencing intimate partner violence, the Youth Service stepped in to offer one-on-one
support.

Youth Service began to meet with Georgie and her family. As they built a relationship
it became clear that she also needed support around mental health, drug use, and managing money. They also found out that Georgie had a clear goal of wanting to find a job.

Step by step, the Youth Service helped her attend job interviews, fill out ID forms, and join a work-exposure trip with other young people. Family was part of the process, ensuring the support felt right and at Georgie’s pace.

Georgie also began attending kungka nights, spending time with other young women and joining activities like softball and bush trips-safe spaces where she could reconnect and grow.

Today, Georgie has tried different types of work, caught up on important paperwork, and spends more time surrounded by supportive peers and family. While her journey is still unfolding, her life is more stable, and she is building the future she imagined for herself.

Funding support was provided by the National Indigenous Australians Agency.
