Kiwirrkurra community is situated in the Gibson Desert in the far north of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, approximately 850km west of Alice Springs and 200km west of Kintore. NPYWC has a fantastic team of Youth Development Officers who have been living and working in Kiwirrkurra since 2010.

They arrange HEAPS of fun, active, healthy activities for young people and offer excellent support for anyone facing problems or challenges, or those who just need a hand.

Here is a taste of what they have been up to lately:

The Kiwirrkurra Youth Program has been looking to build on the good work of the past as well as introduce a few new activities over recent months.

  • The introduction of a Bingo night has been a hit with community members of all ages trying their luck to win prizes. Vivienne, Marra and Eric have been helping to setup run and pack up these nights and this event has quickly become a weekly feature. We make a small turnover by selling the bingo cards which go back into the program in the form of new prizes.
  • We have also recently introduced an Anangu movie night held in the main street or at someone’s house. This has been a good opportunity for families to enjoy the outdoor cinema together watching a mix of Anagnu films from community made hip hop and band videos to old time movies. Over the coming months we will look to use the warm evenings to expand this night into a good family event.
  • We have continued to run bush trips with Maku and Rumiya always on the menu. We have also been lucky to get some delicious blackberries. The late sunsets have also provided the opportunity to do a bit of bush cooking and having dinner as well as make up and photo shoots for the teenage women.
  • We enjoyed having Christmas in Kiwirrkurra while the youth program put on a Christmas Barbeque and disco for the community as well as fireworks for New Years Eve. As always Disco is an in-demand activity and Eric particularly is an awesome DJ and runs these weekly events with his much experience.
  • A weekly Women’s night has continued with a good chance for the girls and women to relax together in a supportive space.
  • Fella’s nights will also be resuming with a weights program and, with the addition of some band equipment, a music program.
  • With the repair of the Basketball lights the youth program will have a dedicated space again and with the cooler weather will come the return of sports like Softball and Football.

The program is looking bright for 2016 with some spear making projects and family photo series in the works as well as continuing to be led by our amazing colleagues who are always giving us ideas about how to improve the program and guiding the program along.
