Finke

Finke (Aputula)

Finke or ‘Apatula’ is located 220km south of Alice Springs near the South Australia and Northern Territory borders.

The community of approximately 250 people is most famous as the dusty destination for the annual ‘Finke Desert Race’.

Come on down to the rec shed after school and during holidays to talk to us and join the fun. NPYWC has a team of Youth Development Officers who live and work in Finke. They arrange HEAPS of fun, active, healthy activities for young people and offer excellent support for anyone facing problems or challenges, or those who just need a hand.

Here’s a taste of what’s been happening in Finke lately...

Cooking We like baking and sautéing food in small cooking workshops, but our kitchen is best known for its pizza pies. Pizza Night is a youth driven business enterprise that produces professional quality pizza for sale in our registered kitchen. Work has never been this fun!

Building The new Youth Woodworking Project has started as a pathway to certificate training in construction and safety. It is still early days, but we have one fine workbench completed.

Racing The BMX racing and maintenance programs are without a doubt the most popular in Finke. We now have over 25 BMX bikes and safety equipment to ride on our newly refurbished track.  Finke Desert Race here we come!

Exercising The young fellas are enjoying weightlifting with world class equipment in the new Aputula Crows gym and exercise facility in the Rec Hall. It’s been a great way to get fit, blow off steam and train for the next Carnival.

Entertaining We have new lighting equipment for our discos, we are fully amped for band nights, and we are always up for a movie. But mostly we like to dance. We can completely disco fog our Rec Hall in less than one hour.

Creating Aputula youth take part in a variety of creative art workshops: painting, moulding, sewing, sculpting screen-printing, and even publishing. We use our hands, we use our fingers, and we use our minds.

Connecting In partnership with the NT Libraries RIIPA program, Finke Rec Hall is about to open the doors to a brand new internet café with five internet-connected computers. This will be a good chance for friends and family in community to see Finke youth away at school via video conferencing.
