more info

The Speaking Up about Mental Health CDs present two Ngangkari (traditional healers), Rupert Peter and Andy Tjilari, from the APY Lands talking about mental health issues on the Lands. Their discussions cover a range of issues from their acquisition of ngangkari powers as children to the effects of substance abuse and suicide in remote communities today. Their words have been translated and are spoken in English by Patrick Hookey who has worked with them over many years. These CDs were designed to promote cross-cultural understanding for non-indigenous doctors, psychiatrists, nurses and health workers who work with Anangu experiencing mental health issues and their carers.

more info

These CDs are full of stories in the Pitjantjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra languages about mental health. The stories are from indigenous and non-indigenous people working with mental health issues in the Tri-State area and with urban aboriginal people. They cover subjects from anger management to early intervention. They were originally broadcast over local radio in the Tri-State area, and then made available as CDs

Both CD sets are available from ttam@npywc.org.au
