Submission into Self-harm and Suicidal Behaviour amongst Young People

For many years, NPY Women’s Council Directors have been concerned about the level of self-harm and suicide amongst young people in the NPY region and beyond. They are keen to ensure that young people are offered the right support and help when they need it the most.

On the 22nd April 2014, the National Children’s Commissioner Megan Mitchell put the call out to organisations and individuals across Australia to provide submissions relating to self-harm and suicidal behaviour amongst young people under the age of 18 years. NPY Women’s Council felt this was a good opportunity to reflect on what was happening in the NPY region for young people and to make recommendations to address these issues.

In September 2014 NPY Women’s Council Deputy Coordinator Liza Balmer and Youth Program Manager Christine Williamson made a presentation at the Alice Springs round table forum on the key issues and recommendations outlined in the submission. This forum was facilitated by the National Children’s Commissioner and the Human Rights Commissioner Mick Gooda.
