Deadly Awards 2011

On 28th September 2011, Liza Balmer, Tanya Luckey and Sonia Wongway hit the stage at the Sydney Opera House to accept a Deadly Award for Outstanding Achievement in Aborigianl and Torres Strait Islander Health. This award is in recognition for NPY Women’s Council’s campaign against the growing problem of foetal alcohol spetrum disorder, called “No Safe Amount – the effects of alcohol in pregnancy”.

The advertising campaign (and now DVD resource) developed by the Child Nutrition Program at NPYWC as an educational program works at the preventative level to raise awareness within the target group and public awareness more generally, about the immense risks of alcohol use during pregnancy, while also working more selectively to encourage individual partners and families to support and encourage their pregnant women to refuse consuming alcohol during pregnancy.

The DVDs were developed and produced with local community members and are in English and Pitjantjatjara to ensure their relevance, acceptance and sustainability amongst the target audience.
